Why do some hypertension drugs not work on women?

The Kv2.1 pro­tein can dilate blood ves­sels, so some hyper­ten­sion drugs will tar­get it. Big prob­lem: New research says that Kv2.1 dilates men’s blood ves­sels, but it con­tracts wom­en’s.

“We were shocked at the dif­fer­ence and the strength of that dif­fer­ence. We think we’ve found the phys­i­o­log­i­cal expla­na­tion for what some of our clin­i­cal col­leagues are see­ing in patients ― some high blood pres­sure med­ica­tions tend to work bet­ter for men, while oth­ers work bet­ter for women.”
