Why I still block your ads

Published July 7, 2016

One of the sites I visit regularly for my day job is Medical News Today. I use an ad-blocker in my browser, though, so I was greeted with this:

med-news-ad-blocking

In case you can’t see it, it asks me to disable my ad blocker to help support the site. A reasonable request, in fact. But my ad blocker (uBlock Origin) shows me how many ads it blocks on a page. For Medical News Today it read “25 or 47%” — meaning that there were 25 ads on that page, or 47 percent of the content. Holy moly.

It’s one thing to ask me to show a couple of ads on your page, but if almost half your content is ads, then no, no I’m not going to disable my ad blocker.
