Remembering Tommy Holohan

Published September 9, 2013

Tommy HolohanThis is Tommy “Chip” Holohan — his sister is married to my brother.

He died on 9/11, a member of FDNY’s Engine 6.

While thousands of people were rushing out of the fire, he was rushing in.

The word “hero” is overused these days, which is a shame. Because people like Tommy — like firefighters across the country and around the world, who intentionally risk their lives to help save others’ — really do deserve the title.

As far as 9/11 goes, justice has been done, in a sense — bin Laden is dead. It’s symbolic, but symbols are important. If nothing else, they help us remember. It’s been 12 years now, and soon enough all this will be a chapter in a history book — too easy to forget. Let’s not.
