Stuck with a crappy mouse

Posted 11/11/09

I forgot to charge my Really Great Mouse (the Logitech MX Revolution, if you care). It lasts for a week on a charge, so it’s easy to forget. So I switched to whatever I could find as an emergency backup mouse — in this case, a super-cheap Logitech NX50 notebook mouse.
Erg. What junk. How [...]

DVRs and the TV industry — told you so

Posted 11/9/09

Nice piece from the Electronic Frontier Foundation called “DVR Is TV’s New BFF“:
Digital Video Recorders (DVRs), once considered a mortal threat by the entertainment industry, have now become its new best friend. It’s just the latest example of how the industry’s constant warnings of the dangers of “piracy” frequently turn out to be baseless hysteria.

5 simple reasons Thunderbird is better than Outlook

Posted 11/6/09

Spam filter. Thunderbird has one, and it’s darned good. Outlook doesn’t, although it claims to. It doesn’t catch most spam, and it’s not trainable.
Customization. I can change just about anything about Thunderbird’s look and feel. For example, the text size of anything. (In Outlook I can only change the font of the message list; the [...]

Real unemployment figure hits 14.8 percent

Posted 11/6/09

The news is reporting unemployment at 10.2 percent, but as always, that’s incorrect.
The actual number, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

153,975,000 Americans in the workforce
15,700,000 collecting unemployment benefits
5,995,000 who want a job but have used up their unemployment benefits

Total unemployed / workforce = 14.8 percent
(That’s 21.7 million unemployed out of [...]

Microsoft’s better Wii than the Wii?

Posted 11/5/09

Its Project Natal product does away with controller completely. Per Newsweek:
[I]nstead of a player holding a gadget, a special device mounted beneath the TV uses a video camera, an infrared sensor, and software to identify a player’s motions. The gamer’s actual silhouette, not a generic avatar, can then be inserted directly into games.

OK, so now [...]
