Real unemployment figure hits 14.8 percent

Published 11/6/09

The news is reporting unemployment at 10.2 percent, but as always, that’s incorrect.

The actual number, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

  • 153,975,000 Americans in the workforce
  • 15,700,000 collecting unemployment benefits
  • 5,995,000 who want a job but have used up their unemployment benefits

Total unemployed / workforce = 14.8 percent

(That’s 21.7 million unemployed out of 154 million total.)
