msnbc.com BREAKING NEWS: 13-year-old Kavya Shivashankar of Kansas
wins Scripps National Spelling Bee
Kavya Shivashankar of Kansas. I just love that. Too many people forget too quickly that what makes this country great is our incredible, unprecedented mix of people — people, cultures, ideas.
Homogeny breeds mediocrity. Evolution happens when something changes — when something different is added to the mix. If it’s good, it prospers. And we have prospered.
It’s easy to get all rah-rah and wrap yourself in a flag because we’ve got a ton of money and a lot of guns, but the reason this place is so damn rich and prosperous is because we embraced changed.
300 million people who all think alike don’t get much done. But 300 million people with last names like Smith, O’Hearlihy, Mogatu, Fellini, Andreesen, Ivanovich, Rodriguez, Zaradic, Chan, Konishi, Shivashankar and a million others — we do wonderful things. We do magic.
Don’t forget it.
Argue about gun control and abortion and school prayer and taxes and health care and the wars we fight. But don’t forget that we can argue about those things because we have the money for weapons and medicine and schools and roads and clean water, and all those things because we’re all different – not because we’re all the same.
Kavya Shivashankar of Kansas. W00t!

WHAT MONEY???? This country is SO far in debt that we are looking at a revolution! C’mon Andrew! Are you and Karen REALLY that dense?
gnomic says:
Talkin’ ’bout a revolution… well, ya know…
So, the US in debt. And this somehow relaties to a hetrogenous society how? Other than Dobbes and Beck And Hannity and the GOP hate mongers blaming immigrents for all of our problems even though they have nothing to do with it. The money the cost isn’t much more than a rounding error in the budget.
More, they will be our salvation. Who do you think will be paying down the debt? Workers. The whole system depends on expanding the workforce. And Americans – despite the fundies efforts – aren’t breeding fast enough to meet demand.
So we will depend on immigration to make up the gap. Don’t like the answer? Tough. Economics really doesn’t care.
Of course, if this isn’t your point, what is?

gnomic says:
Homogeny breeds mediocrity. That sums up the GOP quite well.
I second your point of view there. We selected our neighborhood becuase of the difersity of people. We chose to adopt oversees because we liked the idea of a multi-ethic family. We pick our firends because they are different (some more than others, my friend ;)
We choose not to live in a small, shallow minded world. And we would like to see America do the same, dispite her enimies trying to scapegoat people who look different, live differnet, and worship differnt. Those who preach hatred, intolerence, and blame others are the true enimies of our great nation. Those who bring us together and help others up are the true Americans.
