Some of you regulars (the five or six of you) may have noticed that I ran out of bandwidth the other day until I paid the good folks at TotalChoiceHosting for some extra gigs. What you didn’t see was that I was getting bandwidth warnings other times, but I was able add some before it ran out.
OK, *I* like this blog, but I couldn’t imagine it was that popular. What was the deal?
Finally, I found it. Kittens. Damned kittens. That one blog post was in the top ten when you did a Google images search on “kittens.” And naturally people were clicking to view the full-sized images.
So I downloaded them all and saw they were saved as high-quality (Photoshop #12) JPEGs. I resaved them as lower-quality pics, which were a fraction of the size and looked almost as good. Bandwidth problem solved.
And then I realized, “I own a lot of domains!” So I moved the images over to whizkid.com, which isn’t using nearly its bandwidth quota. Bandwidth problem solved.
In case you care. :)

That’s odd — when I click the link I don’t have a problem at all. Hmm… I’ll check it out. Thanks!
Andrew says:
Ah, got it — there was an extra “s” in the file name (kittens instead of kitten). All fixed. Thanks again!

I’ve had the same problem on my Blahg a couple times. Earlier this year I got bandwidth ett-up (past tense of eatified, you know) for pervs looking at my pictures of Amy Lee. I resized them as you mentioned, and only suffered one day of bandwidth exhaustion. Last week, the pervs started looking at my pictures of Christina Ricci (I’m in lust with her, so have a few images up). Again, resizing helped, but this time I’m almost a week offline until my counter resets. I’ve had to learn (and learn slowly, because apparently I’m not as bright as I like to think I am) that I have to monitor my bandwidth every day. This latest surge on my site took me from 15-50 Meg/day to just over 5 gig in a single 24 hour period…
When I first started my web site, I thought getting high up on Google would be good, but now I realize all it does it eat up bandwidth from people who will look at the pics and then go away without consuming other content. Those bastiches.

Need to fix the links for the kittens, though; when I click on the link to the right, there are no pics, and if I click on one of the placeholders, it says that there is no such image…
