Proof of bad testimony in the Julie Amero trial

Published 3/14/07

Mark Lounsbury, the computer crimes officer for the Norwich Police Department, testified that links change color when they are deliberately clicked on, but not if a page is displayed via pop-up.

Robert Hartz, the information services manager for Norwich Public Schools, testified that he didn’t believe endless loops of porn happened.

So I decided to prove them both wrong with a set of simple Web pages. No worries — you won’t be innundated with pop-ups or anything. But if you were a juror on the case, they might make you think twice about what you were told.

Click here to go to the demo showing that Lounsbury and Hartz are wrong.

Dorene says:

These people just sound stupid. I mean, I’m definitely no expert on any of this, but it seems like most of this is stuff that even an intermediate user would know. The upside is, it will be easy for Julie’s team to show how stupid the prosecution “experts” are.

Maybe you should go testify on her behalf.

Thanks for keeping us up to date on this, Andrew.

Leland says:

I was thinking the same thing Dorene said about having you testify. Too bad it is too late.

The problem is the jury was made up of computer illiterate people. That’s not really their fault, but the police, prosecution and judge still need to be spanked big time.

If she is exonerated, does she have any legal recourse against the system?

Andrew says:

My fantasy is that Amero’s attorney uses my site in court to demonstrate how the prosecution’s testimony was incorrect. :)

And that new attorney, William Dow, also apparently does personal injury stuff — meaning he’s a good guy to have on hand if you want to sue the pants off, say, a school system.

not just a user says:

thanks for making that endless stream of popups work slowly. i had some users who got that from pornspam email messages when they were using an ancient version of outlook on windows 98 ages ago. the users were not the sharpest tools in the shed (the type who think that shutting off the monitor is shutting off the computer), and once they realized they couldn’t stop it they shut the monitor off and ran to get me. they didn’t have students in the room though.

it might not have to be continuous and uninitiated, all it has to do is do another popup each time the user does something they don’t realize they’re doing to trigger the next popup. sometimes you see popups which have graphical content which simulates the windows gui, which confuses the user who may panic at seeing porn popups, and click on a pseudo-button which is actually a link.

also i think you could add something which throws another popup when you close each popup. so popups keep coming; by closing one, you get one or two more. some should also be ‘pop-unders’ which come up behind the active window so you don’t know it’s there until you close the obscuring window. that would simulate what i’ve seen.

you may not want to irritate your readers by letting them have access to something which will inundate them with popups…

Andrew says:

I made sure the pop-ups stopped at six, although I was tempted to have one of them contain an “onClose” command that would start them again if you tried to close it. But I’m not trying to annoy people, just convince ‘em!

So why don’t you send this to the idiot – er, commupter crimes officer – Judge, and lawyer in the case? Oh, and the state AG too.
