That’s cheap – try ordering a new master for an I30! A new key and remote was ~$250! OUCH!

BTW, the directions don’t always work. Sometimes you have to go through the sequence several times for it to work. Most cars today have a similar sequence and its all very timing dependant. Its often easier to let the dealer do it. I never did get my backup key for my I30 to program right.

I found the same intructions on the web, but the sequence of pedal pushes have to be done within a certain time. Here is what I found:
The Toyota Electronic Control Module does not have programming modes without a pre-programmed key.
If there is no key available that is already programmed into the module, the module must be replaced.

To delete all but one key from the unit:

Type E 1. Simultaneously depress and release brake and accelerator pedals 1 time.
2. Insert existing master key into ignition. Do not turn the key from the OFF (LOCK) position.
3. Within 15 seconds of inserting the key, depress and release the accelerator pedal six times.
4. Within 10 seconds of completing the above step, depress and release the accelerator pedal seven times.
5. The security light will flash, indication all keys other than the one being used have been deleted.
6. Remove the key from the ignition cylinder within ten seconds. It will be the only key still programmed to work

Add Duplicate Key:

2. Insert existing master key into ignition. Do not turn the key from the OFF (LOCK) position.
3. Within 15 seconds of inserting the key, depress and release the accelerator pedal five times.
4. Within 20 seconds of completing the above step, depress and release the brake pedal six times and
remove the key.
5. Within 10 seconds, insert the new key into the ignition.
6. Within 10 seconds, depress and release the accelerator pedal one time.
7. After 80 seconds the new key is registered and the security light will go off.
8. Remove new key and depress and release the brake pedal 1 time.

Toyota only gave me one key, and didn’t tell me about the security system, so when someone stole my keys from the gym Toyota said I had to get the car towed in and buy a key, then pay them to repgram the system. Who is Toyota securing the car from? Surely they know people are going to loose keys.

I had my master key stolen – my whole purse stolen. So the thief knows where I live and he/she has the keys to my 06 Toyota Tacoma, less than a month old. I took my truck to Toyota dealer. Bought a new key and new remote, $170, and had it reprogrammed ($93) along with the set that I had. So now they tell me that the thief can’t start the truck, but they can still get in with the key. So I’m thinking, why do Toyota put key cylinders on the doors if it’s remote keyless entry? Get ride of the key cylinders all together if its capable of opening with a remote. Then thinking again, what happens if you lose the remote? Toyota should think of putting a system similar to GM Onstar in their vehicles, so then I would just call them up to open my truck door if I lose my remote. Not a bad idea??

I just bought a 01 solara and only had one master key. i realized i definitly needed a spair , just in case. of course i didn’t want to pay over a hundred dollars thru a dealership, so i went on ebay and found blank keys for sale. i was a little sketchy but what the hell, couldn’t hurt right. i spent less than 30 bucks and programmed it myself. the directions are a little wierd, but i’ll be honest it took a couple of tries and it worked and saved a lot of money. if you only have one master key, i strongly suggest going this route and get yourelf a second key.

I bought a used 2004 Nissan Altima which only came with one key. I bought 2 key blanks through e-bay. Nissan Dealer wants to charge $82 for programming and $6 each for cutting the keys. With sales tax that is over 100 bucks!!!
Can the key blanks be cut at Home Depot or a Lock Smith and then be programmed by me?

I purchased a 2003 camry from someone and I got only one key ( remote separately attached to keyring). I checked with the dealer and apparently the key I have is Valet key and I can’t get a duplicate programmed without the master key. In case I did not have the master key, I had to replace the computer which would cost > $2000. The key I have works but I definitely want to get a spare set. What options do I have? Can I buy a blank key and get it reprogrammed or buy a set of keys and get them reprogrammed?

tonyb and steve — I have no idea how to program keys for Nissans or GMCs. I found the Toyota instructions by Googling “reprogram Toyota keys,” so maybe you can find them that way.

RN — Unfortunately, I think you’re out of luck. You can only program new keys from a master key. The only other option you might have is to have the electronic security disabled so a standard key will work.

Your 2005-2006 Corolla uses the Type 2 system with a 32 Bit ECM. Keys are programmed using a scan tool that plugs into the vehicles OBD port.

If you have a new key that is properly cut for the vehicle (ie it operates the door locks and allows the ignition lock to turn)all you need is a procedure called an immobilizer reset. This is done with a scan tool plugged into the OBD port of the vehicle and takes from 15 to 30 minutes.

I have looked all over the internet and found a lot of conflicting methods. Some require the brake and gas pedal method while others are just the key and door method and one says I can’t do it at all on the 2005 and another said if I do try it will get stuck in program mode, etc. The remote was easy compared to the key. Has anyone done the 2005-2006 reprogram with success and which method did they use?

Michael,

2005 Corolla requires a Hardware scan tool to program keys. A Toyota dealership or a automotive locksmith with the proper equipment would be able to help you.

Thank you for the reply. So just to finalize my internet searching, there is no other way to self perform this process like the pre-2004 Toyotas or my remote entry fob. The dealer or locksmith is the only answer? And they can do one key and not both of them?

I read here that the 2005-6 Corolla uses a Type 2 system to reprogram keys. I just picked up an ‘06 Matrix, which I believe is also known as a Corolla Matrix. Which makes me ask, does my Matrix (base model, standard shift)use the Type 2 system as well?

Harsha — You should be able to find a locksmith in your area that will program transponder keys. I just purchased a 2006 corolla ce that only came with the valet key. The locksmith was able to cut me a new key and reprogram my security system all for only about $50.

I just bought some extra keys and remotes. Remotes programmed easily. Transponder key for 2001 Camry XLE went smoothly. Tried to program 2003 Camry XLE key. It won’t program. Then I read that you can only use THREE keys. Now how am I supposed to have a proper spare when there are three drivers in our family? Is it true that a 2003 will allow only 3 keys to be programmed while one can have at least 4 in previous years? I do not like communal keys and…. no you stupid car manufacturers, a thief can still steal a car with this system, it isn’t difficult.

Here are a few different sets of instructions. There are diffent ones for 2002 and below and 2003 and up. I think that 2003 will only allow 3 keys because I couldn’t add one to my 2003 Camry but the 2001 worked.

I have included remote instructions at the end.

For 1998+ Toyota, Lexus
Add Duplicate Key
1. Simultaneously depress and release brake and accelerator pedals 1 time.
2. Insert existing master key into ignition.
3. Within 15 seconds depress and release accelerator pedal 5 times.
4. Within 20 seconds depress and release the brake pedal 6 times and

To program the remotes on your new key, you have to go through the door lock exercise using the old programmed key. I spent a lot of time trying to program using the new key and found out that the old key needs to be used when you do the door lock/unlock routine.

Instructions for programming a transponder key.

Prerequisites:
blank transponder key (eBay.com – $20).
pre-programmed master “black” key for the vehicle.

Programming spare keys: for 1998 to 2002

1.. Copy the cuts of the original working key onto the appropriate
transponder blank.

2.. Enter the car and close all of the doors.

3.. Simultaneously depress and release both the brake and accelerator pedals.

4.. Within five seconds, insert a working pre-programmed key into the ignition cylinder, and turn to the “on” position.

5.. Within fifteen seconds of turning the ignition, depress and release
the accelerator pedal five times for a primary key. (Depress and release four times for a valet key.)

6.. Within twenty seconds, depress and release the brake pedal six times for a primary key. (Depress and release only times for a valet key.)

7.. Turn the ignition to the “off” position and immediately remove the
key.

8.. Within ten seconds of removing the key, insert the new key and turn it to the “on” position.

9.. Within ten seconds, depress and release the accelerator pedal once. The security light will then flash for 60 seconds and then turn off. When the security light stops flashing the programming should be complete.

10.. Start the vehicle to verify that programming was successful.

FOR 2002+
1.Make sure all doors and windows are closed.
2.Insert master key into the ignition cylinder.
3.Cycle the ignition cylinder from ON to OFF 5 times.
4.Open and close the driver side door 6 times.
5.Remove the master key and insert the new duplicate key.
6.DO NOT TURN THE IGNITION CYLINDER ON
7.The new key will be registered after 60 seconds.The THEFT light on the
dashboard will go out,indicating that programming has been completed.

new 2001

1. Insert an already programmed master key into the ignition. Do not turn.
2. Press and release the gas pedal 5 times.
3. Press and release the brake pedal 6 times.
4. Remove the key from the ignition.
5. Insert the new key you want to program into the ignition.
6. Press and release the gas pedal one time.
7. Wait 1 minute. The security light will be blinking for this one minute. When it stops blinking your key is programmed. To end programming step on brake one time.
NOTE: Look for your security light. This light will guide you during the programming procedure. The security light will go off at Step 1. It will remain off until Step 6. The security light will come on and start to blink after Step 6 until the key is programmed. If the security light comes on after Step 4 STOP the procedure and start over again.

If you perform this procedure too slowly your car will not go into programming mode. If you can not get your car to go into programming mode make sure you are using a master key and not a valet key. If you have a master key then you will probably need to perform this procedure more quickly.

IF 2003 from above doesn’t work try this

1. Close all doors.
2. Insert an already programmed master key into the ignition.
3. Turn the key from the OFF to On and back OFF FIVE (5) times.
4. Open and close the drivers door SIX (6) times.
5. Remove the key from the ignition.
6. Insert the new key you want to program into the ignition.
7. Turn the key to the ON position.
8. Wait 2 minutes. The security light will be blinking for this one minute. When it stops blinking your key is programmed.
9. Remove your key
10. Open and close the drivers door 1 time.
NOTE: You have 35 seconds to complete steps 1-5 and 10 seconds to complete step 7. If you do not do this procedure fast enough the car will not go into programming mode and your key will not program.

If the security light does not go out after 2 minutes start the procedure over again.

3. Press lock, pause, unlock (2 second total cycle) 5 times
4. Close, then open driver’s door
5. Repeat lock, pause, unlock cycle 5 additional times
6. Insert key into ignition and turn from lock to “on” two
times (pause in
each location 1 second). (note: “ON” not accessory position)
7. Remove key from ignition
Locks should cycle twice. If not, start over.
8. Press lock and unlock buttons on transmitter
simultaneously for 1-2
seconds then release
9. Press lock and unlock buttons on transmitter again
simultaneously
for 1-2 seconds then release
10.Press lock alone for 1 second, then release
Locks should cycle once
11. Close Driver’s door to exit program mode.
If you want to program more than one remote, repeat steps 8 – 10 with the second remote before finishing with #11.

To program the remotes on your new key, you have to go through the door lock exercise using the old programmed key. I spent a lot of time trying to program using the new key and found out that the old key needs to be used when you do the door lock/unlock routine.
